New Rates Effective April 2026

At their December meeting, the Fairfax Water Board approved changes to the water rates, which will go into effect April 1, 2026.

As a not-for-profit water utility, we only charge what it costs to serve you and this adjustment is necessary to meet rising costs in electricity, water treatment supplies, pipes, and project materials.

  • Adopted 2026 Budget

Why the New Rates are Needed

Providing safe, clean drinking water 24/7 is our top priority. But, just like everything else, delivering that service is getting more expensive. “Inflation” means that costs are going up for everyone, including for water utilities. Here are examples of how much more Fairfax Water has spent in the past 5 years because of inflation:

Graphic showing how much more Fairfax Water has paid for certain materials and services in the past 5 years: 40% increase in the cost of treatment supplies, 85% increase in the cost of pipes and related materials, 32% increase in the cost of meters, 12% increase in construction costs, 61% increase in the cost of electrical equipment, and a 28% increase in the cost of power.

How We Set Rates

Fairfax Water is a not-for-profit utility. That means we only charge what it costs to provide clean, safe water to customers. We are separate from Fairfax County Government, so we do not receive any taxpayer revenue.

When we look at rate changes, we take into consideration:

  • Are the proposed increases fair and reasonable, and will it be applied equally to all customers?
  • What data supports the increase?
  • Are there new regulations we need to consider?
  • What projects do we need to undertake to ensure reliability of service?

Planning for the Future

Another challenge we face is planning for the future. At Fairfax Water, we have plans in place to meet water demands through 2040 and we’re working on plans to ensure our distribution system remains strong through this century. Click here to read more.

This long-range planning allows us to make changes in our rates, fees, and charges in small increments to keep our system strong, which ensures we can expand as needed to meet water demands. Improvements to our system over the past several years cost $500 million, with another $783 million anticipated over the next 10 years. To learn more about these projects, click here.
